It took me some time to understand the aperture settings and why I might want to use one value instead or another. The basics aren’t that hard to explain….  A smaller number denotes a larger opening in the lens, which if course lets in more light faster than a smaller opening.  A large aperture also effects  aesthetics of a [...]

My wife surprised me with a wonderful gift by getting me one of the super-cool camera straps that I’ve been eyeing up. All hand-made, rock-star quality leather strap with a “Speed Racer” style orange band sewn in. I’m not worthy… yet. Shot on Christmas day just after opening it, single speedlte bounced off the ceiling.

A short while back I did some examples of fun bokeh shapes with our Christmas tree lights.  This article from DIYPhotography shows a simple and easy way to make your own bokeh shapes kit.  I did mine even more low-tech than this version… I used scissors to cut half-shapes into folded business cards.  I then [...]

A friend writes: Wondering if you might be able to give me a few pointers on taking better indoor sports pictures without a flash.  Any suggestions on camera settings, modes, etc.? I have played with the white balance and tested out several modes on the Nikon D90. You are quite the expert and thought you [...]

Quick shot of the emblem on my small gear bag. Gotta shoot something. Lit with a single strobe bounced off the ceiling.

I finally broke down and bought myself a new computer. The one I had been using was about five years old and chewing on photos in Lightroom would bring it to its knees. Working on a tight budget so I went with a decent refurbished PC from my local hardware store. It may not be [...]

Quick shot of my little flexible tripod. Laid out on black felt and lit with a single speedlite.

I bought my little point-and-shoot with me on a recent overnight trip to New York. I had brought lots of gear on the trip to Quebec and felt it was too much so I was minimizing. Of course, it also helps if you bring fresh batteries for said camera. So here’s a picture of my [...]

I had planned on using the flash for a photo shoot, not _in_ it. This is my aged and beloved 550EX with the off-camera flash cable attached.  The batteries were dead this night, so I just took this under low ambient lights before calling it a night.

A friend recently asked “Do you have any suggestions for a high quality, but not over the top, camera for my wife? I would like to get one for her birthday. Good battery life is particularly important. Not too bulky.”  My response was as follows… I like the Canons myself.  The Elph line is small [...]
