A friend writes: Wondering if you might be able to give me a few pointers on taking better indoor sports pictures without a flash.  Any suggestions on camera settings, modes, etc.? I have played with the white balance and tested out several modes on the Nikon D90. You are quite the expert and thought you [...]

Quick shot of the emblem on my small gear bag. Gotta shoot something. Lit with a single strobe bounced off the ceiling.

I was packing the camera bag for another trip and came across this old longhorn emblem tucked into one of the pockets. This trophy was most likely once glued to a truck in Austin Texas, where I found it laying in the road near my company’s office building. I haven’t decided what I’m going to [...]

When I take the train into Boston I typically land in Boston’s North Station. On this day I was down by Boston’s South Station and was impressed with the old architecture of this grand building. Standing in the crosswalk I took a bracketed exposure of the face of the building and later combined them with [...]

I bought my little point-and-shoot with me on a recent overnight trip to New York. I had brought lots of gear on the trip to Quebec and felt it was too much so I was minimizing. Of course, it also helps if you bring fresh batteries for said camera. So here’s a picture of my [...]

I had planned on using the flash for a photo shoot, not _in_ it. This is my aged and beloved 550EX with the off-camera flash cable attached.  The batteries were dead this night, so I just took this under low ambient lights before calling it a night.

I love having a nice off-camera flash, but like so many other modern accessories it requires some care and feeding. Usually more feeding than care. This is especially true with this particular unit, which seems to have developed some kind of power leak. Just leaving the batteries installed while the unit is turned off will [...]

A friend recently asked “Do you have any suggestions for a high quality, but not over the top, camera for my wife? I would like to get one for her birthday. Good battery life is particularly important. Not too bulky.”  My response was as follows… I like the Canons myself.  The Elph line is small [...]

The first thing to decide is if an SLR is right for you. You have already discovered one of the reasons to go to SLR, and that is the fine selection of lenses to choose from. The huge number of standardized lens options is really the biggest advantage of stepping up into an SLR camera.

Dark Glass, originally uploaded by JMaz Photo. My lenses on black felt. (Note to self: When shooting black objects, use the white background.) Went back and adjusting some of the light settings… I think it looks a little cool. Just a little. An outtake from the Triple Optics post of a couple days back.
