Watching the fireworks from Greely’s Landing as the grand finale explodes over Sebec Lake in Dover-Foxcroft Maine. I took at least 200 photos of the fireworks, and now I need to figure out what to do with all of them. Maybe a create a slideshow and set it to music? Hmmm…

Some days I have it in my mind that I will be using something from a given set for my daily photo and then something else better comes along. While I still love this photo of fireworks over the lake, it has been bumped down to a daily leftover. Plenty more of these to come when I circle back around sometime in 2011.

Sometimes when I close out the month in a rut it’s good to look back and see all the gems that came out earlier in the month. They can’t all be great, but I’m happy for the ones that are.

I was fortunate enough to catch both ends of a rainbow that appeared over Boston during a recent visit.  I didn’t have my DSLR with me that night but I think I did a good job capturing things with the camera from my pocket.  To make these images I first took several exposures of each scene by focusing on different brightness levels within the frame.  Back at the computer I used an HDR (High Dynamic Range) plug-in to merge the best parts of the exposures into a single image.  The results are good and look pretty natural, the way that our human eyes see things as opposed to a single camera exposure.

Boston Rainbow

Standing on the edge of the Charles River in Cambridge I spotted a rainbow landing on the John Hancock tower in Boston. This is an HDR composite from three exposures taken with my iPhone. The differences between this and the “properly” exposed original are subtle, but I liked the additional contrast in the sky and the water that the HDR brought out.

Mass General Rainbow

While not as clearly defined as the other end of the rainbow, this end landed on top of one of the Massachusetts General Hospital buildings. That’s the Longfellow Bridge on the right crossing the Charles River of course.  This too is an HDR composite made from pictures taken with the iPhone.

On a side note, our son was treated for a serious illness at MGH, and we spend a good number of days “living” in that shiny building. Our boy is healthy again and back to a normal childhood, so we did find our pot of gold at the end of this rainbow.

I had planned on using the flash for a photo shoot, not _in_ it. This is my aged and beloved with the flash cable attached.  The batteries were dead this night, so I just took this under low ambient lights before calling it a night.

On a recent trip to I spent a few evenings walking around with my camera exploring the downtown area.  I got a few good shots of the city and the skyscrapers that piece the city skyline.  Looking at them again, I realized that I have three very different looking photos of the exact same building.  To be honest, it was my first trip to the city and I have no idea what this building is.  I have a feeling, however, that I’m about to find out real soon.  Anyway, they’re cool photos and I wanted to share them with you here.  Enjoy!

I recently had the chance to travel to and spend a few evenings walking around with my camera in .  Having checked the local map I saw a large piece of land dedicated to the “”, so obviously I needed to go check that out.  I borrowed the mountain bike from the corporate apartment, slung my camera bag over my shoulder, and headed out onto the streets of .  It didn’t take long for me to get there, though I was a bit weary of how cyclists on the streets are regarded in this city.  (For the record, the drivers I encountered were courteous enough.)  The building was easy enough to spot from several blocks away, with a grand view from all the way up Congress Street.

This first shot was from the intersection before the entrance to the complex.  I included this couple crossing the street to add some depth and interest to the photo and I was a little entertained at how applogetic they were for ruining my photo.  I smiled and let them know that they were actually part of my photo.  Seriously folks, if didn’t want you in my photo I would have waited for you to cross.

There’s a foot path that leads around the sides of the main drive, and I thought the view from this perspective was quite nice.

I backtracked a bit down the main drive to get the front shot without the gates in view.  I imagine this drive was used for cars at one point but has since been closed off.

Riding around to the back of the building presented this view of the arcitechture.  Being this close doesn’t make much for seeing the building but I thought the angles created from this perspective made for an almost abract style of photograph.

First view of the dome from the back

In the back of the building there is a recessed structure built several floors into the ground.  From what I hear they had considered makeing a second dome in this area, but in realizing that it would block the view of the building from this approach the designed was changed to this inverted dome concept dubbed the Shark Tank.

Another full frontal shot but this time from the backside of the building.  I like how the was beginning to play in the windows as the sun started to set behind me.

Lastly, I wanted to include one shot of the bike I rode in on.  This ride was in the corporate appartment and I was thrilled to make that discovery.  The term “corporate mountain bike” was a hit with my friends when we talked about it.  I later found out that the CEO had bought this to ride when we stayed in town, so hopefully he doesn’t mind that I borrowed it for a bit.  It beat the heck out of a “fitness center” in some hotel, that’s for sure. :-)

Visiting family in Weymouth Massachusetts, we took a walk down to the shoreline to skip stones and look for treasures. The kids collected shells, stones, and several pieces of sea glass. My daughter made this small pile of treasures on the stairs that lead back up the seawall.

I had a hard time choosing between this and the field of flowers for this day’s p365 entry. They’re both great shots, and they both tell a story, so I guess I will just post both photos for prosperity. I’ve also noticed that I failed to take any photos at all the next day, so I don’t feel bad about posting two for this day.

Last week was the local Apple Blossom Festival.  There were different events throughout the week, such as a carnival for four nights and a big parade on Saturday morning.  (I think I even heard fireworks on Saturday night but I haven’t verified that observation.  Anyway, the carnival was set up in the parking lot of a local school just outside the center of town.  I ended up at that school during the day for one reason or another while the carnival was there.  The carnival only runs at night during the week, so everything was quiet and all the machines were shut down and packed away.  Aside from a couple workers doing maintenance on one ride the place was deserted.  I wandered about, camera in , looking for photos hidden amongst the quiet machines.

Revisiting some older photos today and reprocessed this one into something nice. This was taken at sunset at Natural Bridges State Beach in Santa Cruz, . We had spent the weekend here for my birthday, staying in a lovely little B&B just up the road from here.

There was a lovely sunset at the cranberry bogs the other day. (Well, maybe it was last month, but that was a day other than today.) We had taken the dogs and the kids out for an afternoon walk an we were rewarded with a nice colorful greeting to the evening. The fall colors have passed from the trees and the snow had not yet begun to fall, so the golden brown dormant plants were further colored from the golden sunlight coming in from the horizon. New England can be beautiful any time of the year.
